Full Description

The White Lion Inn was in existence by 1732 (though not necessarily on this site). In 1799 it was to let, described as old established but in a new building, with an adjacent house and shop. It is believed to have closed down c 1904, and was sold to Messrs Blake and Beely in 1908. The existing building is 3 storeys tall and clearly of late C18 date. It has sash windows with splayed lintels, and an ornamental doorway to the yard. 3 bays long. Centrally placed windows have been replaced by warehouse doorways when change of use occurred in C20. It was not possible to view the interior, and it is unclear whether it is of the same build as the street frontage building (17-19 Church Street). (1)
