Full Description

The chantry chapel of St James was founded in 1308, and is supposed to have stood on the 6th arch from Nottm on the old Trent Bridge. It was the only bridge chapel in Notts. (1)
The siting of the chapel to the 6th arch (above grid ref) is due to the finding of carved stones in the river below it. Photos of the old bridge published in "Victorian Nottm" do not show traces of corbelling or the like which presumably would have been necessary to carry the superstructure of the chapel. (2)
See M775 for old Trent Bridge.
