Full Description

Priory dissolved 1534, and bought 1539 by William Cooper who reconstructed the remains as a house. Recent repairs on first floor of Georgian house have uncovered and dislodged a stone bearing William Cooper's initials and the date 1598. Fortified for Charles I 1643. Largely rebuilt 1777, on top of the vaulted undercroft of the Med priory. Present 1777 building used as a palace by first bishop of Southwell between 1884 and 1904. (1)
The present house [was] built in 1777 for John Gilbert. Later 1½ storey wings on the N and S. The ex-situ stone in the cellar, with the initials W C and the date 1589 is meaningless in the history of the present house, which was built from scratch. (2)
