A ring ditch revealed as a cropmark (sited at SK 65854184 by ref to plate 1) was excavated during 1972-3. The internal diameter was about 16.0m, and the surrounding ditch 1.25m wide at the top. 2 cremations were found. A secondary burial, was in the ditch where the side and bottom were reddened by heat. It contained several calcined bones, one of which lay on a bed of charcoal. 5 flint blades were also found in the ditch. Cremation "B", presumed to be earlier, was in the exact centre in a rough rectangle 1.0 m x 1.5 m. One calcined bone lay between two layers of charcoal; a calcined broken flint flake was also found. A shallow bowl-like depression 8 cm in diameter, N of, and connected to the pit, contained two layers of charcoal. Carbon 14 tests on the charcoal gave corrected dates from 2100 to 1700 BC. (3)
