Full Description

Cropmark complex S of Morton, A small area of which is scheduled. Includes interconnecting linear features (recorded as individual features, not in land parcels). A very extensive area of marking occupying c 3/4 sq mile. (1)
2 contiguous sub-rectangular enclosures, one with entrance facing SE. Just to the E, a small sub-rectangular double ditched enclosure with entrance facing SW. Wide double linear feature, which could be part of enclosure system. Possible ring ditches in S enclosure. (2) (3) (4)
APs taken by Prof St Joseph between 1959 and 1975 reveal a complex settlement of IA or Ro date. There are several rectangular or subrectangular enclosures containing a series of sequences of ring ditches, some of which can be plausibly interpreted as hut circles. One enclosure, perhaps itself subdivided, contains a central dark "spot", a most unusual feature. Running off from this and other enclosures are slighter ditches which would appear to delineate fields in a strip system, were it not for the fact that more "hut circles" appear in their areas away from the enclosure ditches. The photos taken in 1975 show greater clarity of detail. This may suggest that ploughing is gradually biting into subsoil layers and accentuating buried features. The site lies on arable agricultural land on the gravel plain of the River Trent. (5)
At Fiskerton, ditches and pit alignments are both in use as land boundaries. The main E-W ditch can be traced to a group of small square enclosures at the W which, since they respect the boundary, appear to be occupied during its period of use. Other enclosures to the E are apparently laid out without reference to the E-W ditch. Thus a chronological sequence can be established by reference to the ditched boundary. (6)
Nothing visible on the ground. (7)
