Full Description

Remains of a Saxon cross shaft in Rolleston church, with another stone, similarly carved, fixed in the wall. The stones were recovered from the church walls c 1897. (1) (2)
4 sections of a Saxon stone cross were discovered during restorations ... the 4th, which bore the name of the presumed maker (now illegible) is built into the wall. Inscription read "RAdVLF VS me Fe" - dated 1050-1150 AD. (3)
3 large fragments of this cross now stand in the N aisle, the 4th stone, inbuilt, has been plastered over. The decoration (interlaced buckle with cable moulding) is typical late Saxon. (4)
All four pieces of sculpture are now loose inside the church. Three, comprise of large blocks, damaged through being reused as building material. They may be part of the same monument - all three are certainly part of the same 'school'. The fourth, now having the appearance of a small plaque, shows an animal figure and may have been architectual; there is nothing to suggest that it was ever part of the cross(es). There are no diagnostic features to suggest this piece is Anglo-Saxon and therefore it may well be post-Conquest. (5)
See M3151 for church.
