Full Description

Cistercian Abbey ... dissolved in 1536. Converted to a house by the Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife Bess of Hardwick. Passed to the Saviles, the Lumley Saviles, and the Savile-Lumley-Saviles. House demolished in 1956 leaving ... some Jacobean additions to the S of (W range). (1)
The structural remains ... include the later S addition which is still occupied. The N extension was apparently Georgian but this has now completely gone and its site grassed over. E front also removed. (2)
Demolition by Notts CC left the servants quarters from the old manor house standing. Build up of soil on site due to landscaping around the house. (3)
Morph: Group Interpretation: Post Medieval Formal Garden, comprising 47.2.1 Post Medieval Boundary Bank (within scheduled area) and 47.2.2-4 Post Medieval Ornamental Landscape Features (4)
The seat of the Saviles from the C17 … was a large rambling house … In 1959 the early C18 N end of it was completely demolished, leaving the shell of the basically C17 range and, under it, the medieval remains of the Cistercian abbey. (5)
[In 1537] King Henry VIII granted the whole of Rufford's possessions, valued at £246 15s. 5d., to George, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury. (6)
Named 'Rufford Hall'. (7)
See M 4101 for abbey.
