Full Description
Some features suggest that material from the archbishop's palace was utilised in building the farmhouse. The W wall is of a thin "Tudor type" brick. The house bears 2 metal plaques recording the site's association with the Pilgrim Fathers. One, erected in 1920 by the Anglo-American Society commemorates the 300th anniversary of their sailing to New England. The other was erected by the Pilgrim Society of Plymouth, Massachusetts, "to mark the site of the ancient manor house in which lived William Brewster 1588 to 1608". (1)
There is no provable connection with William Brewster, the Pilgrim Father, in the … so-called manor house. (3)
Pair of cottages, formerly farmhouse ... C16. (4)
Most of the Manor House is known to have been demolished in 1636-37 but part is believed to have survived and to have been incorporated into a farmhouse of c.1750. (5)
…a two storeyed brick-built structure whose earliest features date to the first half of the C16. The building formed part of a moated Archiepiscopal Palace belonging to the Diocese of York. It is possible that the surviving building formed part of a lodging range. Most of the complex was demolished in C17 with the present building subsequently converted into a farmhouse. In the C19…the dwelling was divided into two separate dwellings. (6)
See M 5051 for archbishop's palace, M 5077 for alternative site of William Brewster's house.
