In the same parish (Bingham) the discovery was made of a Saxon grave, in one of the glebe fields. Near the head of a skeleton lying about 14in below the surface was found the umbo or boss of his shield, part of its bracing, and a spearhead 14in long. (1)

…an Anglo-Saxon inhumation, containing a spear and a shield-boss, was found before 1857. A helmet has later been associated with this grave, quite without justification. (8)
