Full Description

The excavation uncovered two phases of industrial activity. The first phase consisted of at least one large stone quarry and possibly two others. These were filled in and levelled over probably in the second half of C13. The second phase was the construction of a malt kiln and an associated building on this artificially levelled platform. After what was probably a short period of use, the kiln was cleaned out and then demolished. Construction, use and demolition all probably between late C13 and early C14. Finds from the excavation included glazed and unglazed pottery, predominantly C13; roofing tiles; iron, bronze and leasd objects (especially iron nails) and quantities of iron slag and animal bone.
