Full Description

[SK54085383] The main gate or gatehouse of the Priory probably stood across the present main drive, somewhere between the Abbey and the point where the footpath crosses the drive. A license of 1437 makes it clear that the gateway faced north. It has been conjectured that the gate was on the west, on the road to Newstead Station but this is based on a conventional positioning of the courtyard on this side and such a position would have entailed a long detour from the main road. (1)
Gatehouse sited on west of Priory. (2)
(Above grid ref) The gatehouse stood in the area immediately north-west of the Abbey where documentary evidence and an 18th c. print suggest that outer court buildings survived until the 18th c. (3)
No trace of the gatehouse was seen in the area indicated. (4)
See M8939 for priory, M8293 for house and M5291 for outer buildings with which the gatehouse has been associated.
