Full Description

Dates from the mid C16 or before (only re-used timbers and some internal walls visible) but was much enlarged by Lewis Wyatt in 1812. Wyatt connected the house with a formerly independent house said to be on the site of … St Leonard's Hospital, founded before 1135. Much reduced in size in 1921-3, when the three-storey entrance block was pulled down. (1)
Named 'Stoke Hall'. (2)
The restistance survey identified the extent of the former range in the N part of the area. (3)
Four phases of post medieval red brick building foundations Cartographic evidence for 1884 and 1919 shows a large range of buildings extending along the N side of the site in the area of trenches 2 and 3. None of these currently exist, having been demolished in the 1920s. Most of the brickwork identified during the present evaluation would seem to form the material remains of these buildings. Walls (307) and (308) appear to be from a slightly earlier phase of construction. No material pre-dating C18 was found. (4)
See M3074 for Hospital.
