Full Description

Farmhouse. 1748. (1)
Lilac Farm includes two of the oldest buildings in Laxton… Its buildings are grouped around a small yard, open on the S side. The oldest building is the farmhouse, dated to 1745, and set at an angle to the road and the other buildings. Its brickwork is in Flemish bond and it has a stringcourse at two levels. Built to an L-shaped plan, with a short rear wing that was originally single-storey, the house was later extended in its NE corner. The roof…is tiled, its relatively steep pitch suggesting earlier thatching. There are a few C18 indicators, such as the chamfer stops on the timber bridging beams. Probably at the turn of the C19 the farmhouse was extended to the rear over a catslide roof, and the rear wing heightened to two storeys. This provided the house with a scullery, perhaps a small dairy, and extra bedrooms above. (2)
