Full Description

Of late C17 character, nine bays wide with outer bays projecting. (1)
The seat of the Markham family. Substantial 2 storey country house with cellars and attic storey. Built in Flemish bond red brick with symmetrical projecting wings on the north (NE) elevation and 2 shallow gable projections on the south (SW) elevation. The central block is a 7 bay double pile construction with stone architraves to 9 over 9 sash windows, giant order pilasters framing the 3 central bays and segmental headed pediment over the door. The stone is fine grained and pale buff in colour and is probably White Mansfield, a domestic sandstone. All masonry of c.1700 is designated as belonging to the original scheme. It is likely that repairs and alterations were made throughout the subsequent centuries. The tithe map of 1841 shows the house divided in two by a line through its short axis and an extension on the north front of the west wing. (2)
Country house, c.1700. (2)
