Full Description
Formerly Listed as MELTON WINGATE OPTICIANS.
Built in 1766 by Dr Bernard Wilson, vicar of St Mary Magdalene and an extremely wealthy pluralist of questionable character. Pavilions of the E terrace remain. The houses are being refurbished [in 1979], some without their chimneys, all without their shutters. (1)
Addition, now an opticians … c.1880. (2)
Historically this was a tightly enclosed street with identical rows of terraced houses lining both the east and west sides. Most of the eastern terrace was demolished after 1968. Only the two ‘pavilion’ houses which marked either end of the former terrace survive on the eastern side of the street. (3)
