Full Description

Named 'Bramcote Grove' (1).
Country house, now a Theological College. c.1810. (2)
Two-storey house with stuccoed external walls and slate covered hipped roof. Its architectural style is typical of the C18/early C19 style. The W elevation of the house contains the former en-trance & comprises three bays of the original house, which has been extended to the N. The for-mer entrance: a classical style portico (doorway has been replaced by a sash window). The former entrance was approached by a driveway from the NW, culminating in a forecourt area in front of the portico. This arrangement of space has been completely altered by the construction of the teaching block and is now utilised as a lawn. The S elevation is the principal façade, and comprises the original five bay house, which has been extended to the E by a further two bays. This frontage overlooks the garden, which, in its current state, comprises a terraced lawn enclosed by a large retaining wall functioning as a ha-ha. The E elevation is less formal and has also been altered. …comprises blocked windows and doors along with the interrupted window arrangement caused by the removal of the NE wing in the early C20. The N elevation is similarly less formal and has been altered through the infilling of the space between the two N wings, insertion of an aluminium door and the provision of a walkway to link to the modern teaching block to the W. (3)
…features within these grounds originally consisted of outbuildings to the N, a former walled gar-den to the N and E, of which the orangery and fragments of the northern wall survive (decorative ironwork attached to a stretch of walling), [also] an area of more formal lawn and terraced garden located to the S frontage of the house, and the former informal parkland to the SE enclosed by shelter belts. (3)
The historic mapping suggests that the original parkland was laid out in an informal C18 naturalistic style on a miniature scale. …the formal areas of the garden were separated from the park by a ha-ha. The quality of the former parkland has been degraded… The majority of the area of the former parkland has been landscaped to provide a playing field, tennis courts, cricket pitch and carpark following the conversion of the house into a college between 1969 and 1971 (sold 1960). Many of the former outbuildings… were demolished to make way for these buildings. (3)
