Full Description

A charming two storey house with deep eaves to the hipped roof. This almost Regency grace must be due to H. M. Wood, 1834. (1) Pigeoncote in curtilage on NE side of courtyard. Cobbled courtyard surrounded on the east by a stable range and to the north by garaging both attached to the pigeoncote (MNT 27113). (2)
Constructed in 1834 for the Revd. Joshua Brooke to designs by Nottingham based architect Henry Moses Wood. The house replaced an earlier vicarage and is set within private parkland with a range of C19 outbuildings to the north comprising former stabling, coach house and dovecote arranged in a L-shaped plan around a central courtyard. A gabled two-storey eastern wing was added to the house between 1901 and 1921.
Two-storey house with small basement has an asymmetrical form with four gables, each of one bay, based around a two-pile plan. Built principally of gault brick laid in Flemish bond. The majority of the fenestration has chamfered brick reveals, gauged brick headers and chamfered stone sills. Large entrance hall…laid with stone slabs and contains a large dogleg staircase. Throughout the first floor the ceilings have been lowered but the original lath-and-plaster ceilings above remain largely intact… Whilst the outbuildings are considered to be curtilage listed, it has been suggested that the single-storey ranges may pre-date construction of the present vicarage, but the two-storey dovecote appears contemporary with the architectural style of the 1834 vicarage. See MNT27113 for outbuildings.
