Full Description

Timber framed with a rubble plinth and herringbone brick infill. Dated 1665 and a rare survival in south Notts; restored in 1977-8 by F. W. B. Charles. (1)
"C165?M" is very indistinctly inscribed on the door lintel. Such huge and imposing buildings fronting a village street, at one time common, are now extremely rare. (2)
Box framing dated. 'C1651M' on lintel of front entrance. Tree-ring estimates … 1635-55. (3)
Lintel appears to read '1651GM'. I don't know why Pevsner says 1665. (4)
Documentary research by the Hammonds has produced several references to a George Martyn of this period … who it seems likely was the farmer who had the barn built. (5)
A mid C17 date for the construction of the barn seemed most probable. All the timber was of Oak and none had been reused from earlier buildings. The barn had undergone some alterations and repairs, mostly of a minor nature. The original wattle and daub noggin had everywhere been replaced by brick arranged herringbone fashion, probably quite early in the C18. Much of the south bay had been demolished and rebuilt in brick in the C19 and only the gable tie beam and parts of the framing at the rear had survived. C 1651 M is incised on the lintel of the front entrance. 1755 and 1778 are incised on the rear principal post of a truss, these latter giving a termini antequem for the construction. (6)
