Full Description

Old peoples' home. An early C18 four-bay, three-storey house much enlarged, with elaborate landscaping, by T. C. Hine for Sir Thomas Parkyns in 1852. (1)
The Manor House was formed around an existing 3 storey house thought to be C18. An addition was built c.1835. The former roof covering was probably replaced with matching Westmorland slate when the Manor House was built but it appears that the roof trusses are original. These are of the strutted collar type, parts of which extend below a ceiling of reed and plaster. Extended in 1852, the architect of the extension was Thomas Chambers Hine (and the builder a Mr W. Oliver and carpenter Mr S Parker; both descended from a line of craftsmen from Ruddington). The extension was built to the S and W and became known as The Manor House. It is likely that the 3 storey wing projecting to the NE was erected at the same time as it is shown on an 1862 sale plan. The extension engulfed the original house and since 1852 the layout would appear to have received little significant change. The outer walls are brick with a coating of Stucco, which is given deep horizontal ‘vee’ shaped grooves to the lower elevations. The roof is covered with green Westmorland slates laid in diminishing courses. The underside of the slates are torched against the battens. The eaves has a moulded fascia and wide overhang supported by decorative stucco coated timber brackets. Some of the early timber panel doors survive. There is a fine example of an encaustic tile floor in the west entrance, probably by Mintons and a coffered ceiling is situated over. (2)
