Full Description

The high arches of [the] railway viaduct (1875) … rise right in the middle of the town and cut off the parish church from the market place. (1)
The 350-yard curved viaduct with which the Midland Line to Worksop sliced Mansfield in half. There are 15 spans with arches 30 to 40 feet high together with 250 yards of embankment. (2)

This railway viaduct was built as part of the Midland Railway’s Mansfield to Worksop Line. It should be credited jointly to John Sydney Crossley (the railway company’s chief engineer) and William Barlow (consulting engineer). See photographs of the Quarter Sessions railway plans held at Derbyshire Record Office (Q/RP/2/91), which demonstrate this. The viaduct of 188 yards in length, 55’0” at its apex, is indicated on the section drawing. (comments and photos provided by Erewash BC conservaiton officer - James White - 1/10/15)
