Full Description

Canal aqueduct. The canal was authorised in 1793 and opened in 1797. (1)
The structure of the brick built aqueduct was revealed during the watching brief. It was recorded in plan and in elevation. Removal of the canal lining above the structure revealed the arched roof of the aqueduct tunnel, and that it had been supported by several brick buttresses along its length. These abutted the tunnel roof, but it was not known if they had been built during original construction works, or if remedial consolidation works had been carried out at some point in the last two hundred years. The façades at each end of the tunnel were brick-built, and irregularly shaped. (2)
Grid ref for S entrance.
