Full Description

C18 or early C19. (1)
Subject to an Article 4 Direction issued 5th May 2022.
The building dates to the later-18th/early-19th century period, formerly being Gringley on the Hill’s main coaching inn on the historic route between Sheffield/Doncaster/Bawtry to the west and the port town of Gainsborough to the east. It operated as an inn, pub and stabling for horses, and in 1844 also operated as a post office. It was also used historically as a court baron for the recovery of debts and for proving the will of copyholders. The building has a highly decorative façade of Flemish bond brickwork, with red brick stretchers and darker ‘burnt’ headers. This type of brick colour pattern is relatively rare, the only other examples within the district all being listed (e.g. Pond Farm, East Markham). The pattern would have made the building very striking when first built, contrasting with the otherwise plain red brick buildings elsewhere on High Street. Other features of note include a range of historic windows, including ‘2 over 1’ sashes on the ground floor and ‘2 over 2’ sashes on the first and second floors. This style was likely installed in the late-19th/early-20th century period. Historic photographs show that the building previously had ‘8 over 8’ sash windows, likely original to the building’s construction. Whilst the present windows are not original, they are nonetheless a historic phase of alteration which contributes to the building’s significance. The ground floor windows in particular, with frosted lettering on the lower portions inscribed “TAP ROOM” and “SMOKE ROOM”, illustrate the former use as a coaching inn/public house, and provide a greater understanding to this part of the Conservation Area. On the west side of the building is a single storey former post office, added in the later-19th century. The windows on this part of the building are later-20th century, although are of a timber construction. The door appears to be of an early-20th (1930s) century style. Above the door is a small canopy with decorative timber brackets. The use of the building as a public house ceased in the 1970s, and the property was converted to a dwelling as approved in 1980.
