Full Description

Former coaching inn. C18 front wing, much altered. Large back additions. (1)
Former coaching inn on the original Great North Road, originally a farm, the earliest identifiable part is 17th century (some internal timbers) - legal records date back to 1650, with 18th, 19th and 20th century additions and alterations; Red brick (mostly rendered) with clay pantile roofs; Primarily comprises two parallel ranges stretching back from the road, mostly 18th century, with 1830s link between the two fronting the road, cantad bays added mid-19th century, early-20th century extension to left (north) side; brick chimney stacks, timber joinery including glazing bar sashes; Early-20th century section has mansard-type roof, leaded timber casements, brick arches, pair of tripartite chimney stacks on front and large brick chimney on rear (itself a prominent local landmark); Adjacent (south) to the main building is a converted former stable/cottage range, together with two brick and pantile outbuildings to the rear; Originally called the Blue Bell, the coaching inn was visited by Queen Victoria in 1835 when owned by George Clarke, was turned back into a house in the 1840s (Henry Beever), turned back to a hotel in 1905 (Mr P Grain, of London) and shortly after was renamed the Ye Olde Bell Hotel, commandeered by military in 1939, accomodated Queen maude of Denmark in 1950s, suffered a fire in 1953; contains a ceiling from Wiseton Hall and panelling from Bradgate Hall in Leicestershire.
