Full Description

A new house by James Paine [was] 'built piecemeal' by the second Viscount [Galway], who inherited in 1751. The building accounts … show that the E wing was built first in 1754-5. It was followed in 1759-65 by the body of the house. The private W wing [was] built in 1771. The wings were demolished in 1812. Lindley & Woodhead extended [the central block] at both ends by two bays and raised the attic to a full storey. The S front they altered completely, by adding four pilasters … as well as a porch of paired Tuscan columns with a typically Regency ironwork balcony over. (1)
