Farmhouse. C18. (1)
The farmhouse lies alongside the Main Street. To its rear is the farmstead, the layout being of the courtyard form, one of the standard farmstead layouts types. Beyond this is an open area. The buildings are of a variety of ages with the earliest being the aisled barn, and the remainder developing over the period C18 to C20. The site predates the Enclosure of the Parish in 1795. The non-listed traditional buildings appear to meet the curtilage tests and should be considered to be listed by virtue of this. The listed farm buildings are all included within the County Council’s TA risk Register (Dec 2006). The plan form of the (farm) buildings is one of typical farmstead forms. What is not typical is the layout of buildings around the outside. Conventionally, a two storey building was on the north side to protect the cattle in the winter within the south facing crewyard. Here, the timber framed barn was not replaced and so retained its site on the south side. The farmhouse was to the north with limited space between its garden and the yard, and so the two storey building was built along the east side, to shelter the crewyard from the second worst winter aspect. It was rebuilt and extended in a piecemeal fashion and evolved over a 250 year period. The existing buildings on the site (Dec 2006) comprise a farmstead. They include the farmhouse, an aisled timber-framed barn, stables and cattle shelter, milking parlour and two-storey general storage building with granary over. The buildings are brick built. (2)
