Full Description
When [the fifth Duke of Portland] died in 1879, excavations had just begun for his enormous Bachelors' Hall. The new Duke … [had] the foundation walls of the sunk hall … converted into an Italianate sunken garden, with a wooden pavilion and pergolas. (1)
