Full Description

Mid C19. Late C19 shop front. (1)
C18 or early C19. Comprised of a series of buildings, with major structural additions…in the C19. Later the roof was removed from the western frontage and the attic space probably raised to provide a third habitable floor… Mapping shows the buildings were in existence by 1848, along with a number of smaller ancillary buildings and open ground to the rear (east) of the property. Documentary sources indicate the site may have contained a retail element since at least 1770’s when a grocer named John Doughty resided at 19 Carolgate. A pawnbroker’s traded at the location from the late C19 which was succeeded by a florist and nurseryman in the early C20. (2)
