Full Description

Pair of houses, formerly a farmhouse. Late C17, with early C19 additions. (1)
61-63 Long Acre is a Grade II listed, L-shaped, 2-storey building. It has a typical 17th century plan with a large chimney-stack with back-to-back fireplaces between 2 rooms. Part of a cruck frame survives. Early brickwork and timbers are visible on the rear elevation. Dendrochronology has dated the main part of the buildings to 1617. The rear part of the building was probably added in the 18th century. Originally 1 ½ stories, second story bedroom were inserted in the 19th century. The road side frontage and gable ends date from the late 19th century in the vernacular revivalist design, probably funded by the them owner, Lord Caernarvon. It is now divided into 2 residences and has been extended in recent years. (2)
A total of 7 samples was obtained from a selection of timbers at this building. All of the samples produced a felling date of 1617. It is highly likely that this represents the felling date of all the other timber in this phase of the building and indicates that construction took place very soon after this time. (3)
