Full Description

Normanton-on-Soar. On Main Street a good timber-framed cottage with a jettied front. (1)
Tree ring dating analysis has been carried out ... and the dates c.1454 and c.1490 have been deduced for the various builds. C18 and C19 alterations. (2)
in 1996 16 samples were collected as slices and coring. Phases 1 and 2: Two complete bays defined by 3 closed cruck trusses from the original house, with firm evidence for one or more additional bays. Unusually, this is set gable end to the street. Axial joists in bay 1 probably relate to a ceiled inner room, partitioned on the ground floor. Bay II was probably the open hall with bay III (demolished) for service. The house is well-constructed, but with plain undecorated carpentry. This phase has been dendro-dated to c.1454. About 30 years later (c.1483), a narrow two-storey jettied parlour was added at the street end; this is well finished, with close-studding to both the gable and side elevations. Surprisingly, it seems not to have had any direct access from the road. Later Phases: The axial beam for the inserted hall floor has been dated to c.1554. At this period, or possibly earlier, a smoke-hood was inserted against truss 3. Most of the exterior walling was replaced in brick, probably in the C19 and, more recently, the walls have been lined internally. The demolition of bay III cannot be dated. (3)
Carpenters marks in the form of long cuts identify the truss numbering, the north side numbers a re differentiated by an additional slash. The trusses also carry level marks. (3)
