Full Description
Founded 1669 by Charles Read and built soon afterwards. The type of five-bay, two-storey brick house with hipped roof and dormer windows which appeared all over England in the last quarter of the C17. (1)
Read's Grammar School … was closed in 1916 owing to lack of pupils and the poorness of the building. This school was founded in 1671 by Charles Read, on a site given by John White of Tuxford. (2)
Double doors: Date on the outside of the door reads 1757 but on the inside of the door are the initials ‘CR’ and the date 1675. (3)
Tromp l’oeil window to the left of the front door appears to be a limewash painting over porous lime mortar. (3)
