Full Description

House. C17 with extensive C19 alterations. Interior has considerable remains of timber framing. (1)
Dated to the seventeenth century, with later remodelling. The building is two storeys in height, with a cellar and attic. Three bays. It has blue Lias stone footings but is otherwise rendered brickwork. The property is now a double pile structure with, later, single and double storey extensions to the west and north respectively. The property is represented on the enclosure map of North Collingham, dated 1790, as an L-shaped building with a structure at its crook. Only the eastern arm of the L-shape could be sensed archaeologically, and this is taken to be the oldest surviving phase of the house.
The original configuration of 12 Bell Lane was probably an early modern [C17/C17], L-shaped, two-storey, stone and timber-framed structure now represented by the two eastern bays of the building. This was then substantially remodelled, in brick, during the eighteenth or early nineteenth century to give the appearance of a polite Georgian house – especially on the south elevation which faces onto the street frontage. Further additions were made to the north and west during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. (2)
