Full Description

Street view 2009 shows two storey house, two rooms deep with double roof, not in line. Tile roof, Flemish bond, flat arch lintels. (1)
With the farmhouse at its head, the older farm buildings form a linear pattern. A similar collection of buildings can be seen on Mark Pierce’s map of 1635, although none of the current above-ground structures are likely to pre-date 1750. Henry de Bruyn’s survey of 1812 lists the buildings here as a brick and tile house, a carthorse stable with granary over, a small barn and convenient farming sheds… A small part of the original stone causeway…at the side of this yard can still be seen today. Possibly the oldest building on the site is the stable and granary block, with its evidence for stone footings. The farmhouse itself was built as a simple 3-cell L-shaped building facing the road and with a centrally-placed entrance. This is a common plan in Laxton for buildings dating from at least 1745. The building will have had two end stacks, and its high eaves level allows for a garret, lit from the west side. Appears to be little altered and despite 3 phases of rebuild and addition, its form is very much as in the C18. It remains one of the best working group of buildings in Laxton (1998). At some point in after 1885 the farmhouse was enlarged to provide worker accommodation on the upper floor, and the kitchen moved to the area below. This took the form of a gabled extension to the NW corner with an original slate roof (not common in Laxton) and an external bread oven, now no longer in place (the trace of the still shows). The farmhouse was now physically attached to the farm buildings for the first time. (2)
