Full Description
The façade appears to be a mid C19 brick-built house. Once inside…it is immediately clear that the building retains substantial elements of a timber-framed building. There are a number of large joists to the ground-floor ceiling. At first floor level too, traces of timberwork are to be seen. A slightly cambered tiebeam…reveals mortices designed to take large curved wind braces…and a series of close-set vertical studs. In the attic is to be found a 2 bay roof, the former open hall nature of the house being indicated by smoke blackening to the timbers. The east gable comprises a truss of principal rafters with collar and tiebeam, closed by close-set studs, very well carpentered and jointed, and inscribed with a sequence of intricate assembly marks, in-filled with straw daub. 9 the core samples were obtained from the roof timbers of the central, probably open hall range. 8 of the 9 samples were useable and indicated that the roof of Manor Farm is constructed of timbers felled in 1478.
