Full Description

Halifax House (also known as Mansfield House) is a Victorian residence (now two flats) and shop. This highly decorated façade is rear admired as it sits close to this narrow section of the main road. Built of red brick with blue brick detailing. It has decorative stone quoins to the corners and decorative corbelled eaves with moulded brick. The shop has a ceramic tiled frontage and was once a butcher’s. Timber sash windows have fine stone dressing (cills and headers) and stone mullions. The six-panel door has a tripartite over light under a stone lintel. The slate roof has decorative ridge tiles, three chimney stacks with blue brick detailing. The west gable end is angled making the front elevation longer than the rear. Brick outbuildings can be seen at the rear. Historic maps show an L-Plan building on this plot in 1915 which suggest that Halifax house was built after that date or was refaced. The front elevation is in Flemish bond with moulded bricks to the window jams, whereas the gable ends are in a less decorative English Garden Wall bond. A detached brick-built outbuilding sits to the rear of the house, probably a former stable. (1)
