Full Description
Farmhouse with outbuildings and Smithy. Pre-dates the 1883 OS map surveyed and published 1884 (1). The plot is annotated 'Smithy' denonting a former blacksmith's shop on the site at this time. The same annotation appears on the 1916 OS map, published in 1921 (2). A roughly U-Plan complex with farmhouse with gable-end stacks. Stack to the south gable has decorative brickwork. Farmhouse rendered under a replacement clay pantile roof. C20 casements under the eaves and C20 porch to the ground floor. Adjoined is a coursed-stone bay to the north with C20 casement under the eaves and a tripartite, multi-light, C20, casement to the ground floor. Brick-built former barn attached to the north (originally the ridge was lower than that of the stone bay but now all under one replacement roof) (4). Former barn has small, under-eaves, C20 casement to upper-floor and door and flanking C20 casement to the ground floor. All bays under a replacement clay pantile roof. Attached to the south gable (at a right-angle) is a single-storey 6-bay range under a hipped roof with replacement red pantiles. The large windows and split stable door are consistent with a Smithy. The building originally had a chimney stack to the ridge. The south elevation has a split, plank door with a stone lintel. There are 3 large original window openings with stone cills and lintels which contain replacement multi-light timber frames. A fourth (westernmost) window is a later insertion. The fenestration to the east elevation has been altered. Originally this elevation also had large windows with stone lintels and cills which would have allowed the maximum amount of natural light into the Smithy. The windows have been reduced in size with only part of the original lintels left exposed. It now has two small openings with C21 casements. The surviving large openings to the south elevation are consistent with the light needed inside a Smithy and are significant as they relate to the original function of the building. The area outside the Smithy is laid with square stone sets. (3)
