Full Description
A rendered house, bakery and shop with a number of extensions. The original house, considered one of the oldest in the village, was built with its gable end to the road. The roof with its clay plain and pan tiles was originally thatched. The coped gables with kneelers stand higher than the tiled roof and would have retained the thatch. The window openings are of modern dimensions and have timber casements. A later wing was added at a right angle across the rear of the building forming an L-Plan. A front extension was also added with a clay pantile gable roof with dentilated eaves. It’s gable end faces the road and retains the original Yorkshire sliding sash window to the upper floor and has an entrance door and windows to the ground floor. (1)
The rear of these properties share common beams and walls of considerable age. Both have received new frontages over the years. The original building that ran end on towards the Main Street is thought to have been a single-storey construction with three rooms running in a line, the two end rooms each having an attic with ladder access and the central room open to the rafters. The upper floor was added in the first few years of the 1600s. At this time the room furthest from the road was demolished and a new wing built at right angles to contain a buttery and pantry on the ground floor with a bedroom on the first floor. The condition of the beams and roofing timbers also indicate that at one time this was a thatched cottage. Internally the house retains a number of features, including the remains of a stud and plaster internal partition and two panelled doors complete with cockshead hinges, all of late Elizabethan period.
