Full Description

Named 'Foundry'. (1)
Sherwood Foundry (iron). (2)
Luke Abbott established the Sherwood Foundry in 1788. Some years ago, a structure like a beehive kiln, about 3m in diameter, was found buried under foundations; this may have been one of the original casting pits for large machine components. According to documents, the original furnace fan was powered by a horse gin and later by a steam engine. The original row of workmen's cottages was occupied until 1950. (3)
Demolished May 2005.
