Full Description
1875 by Giles & Gough of London. (1)
On the Strategic Property database, the 'old head's house', now classrooms, is dated 1877. The 'old school block' was built in 1929. Much later CLASP work. (2)
A Grammar School built in 1875-77. The architects were Giles and Gough of London. The rear quad was added in 1929. A stone building with Gothic details; a small amount of elaboration is provided by ashlar quoins and moulded archways. Window openings are mullioned and transomed, occasionally with Gothic tracery; the windows are mostly restored metal casements, though some stained-glass lights survive. Elaborate iron hoppers survive. A separate technical block is now absorbed into the quad. The master’s house fronts the main range of the building. To the front is a boundary wall with gate piers. The kitchen has a graduated Westmorland slate roof. The great hall has an impressive truss roof, ornate raised dias and gallery. The ‘Panel Room’ has wood panelling throughout and an original stone fireplace. (NCC Schools Survey 2004) (3)
Locally Listed by MDC on 01.05.2004. Of Mansfield stone with plain tile roof. Two and a half stories in Mock Tudor style, mullion and transom windows with metal glazing units with swivel opening sections. Some buildings on the main façade are entirely of stone, some have their rear walls built in brick while the fronts and gables are of stone. Further classrooms added at rear in 1929 to form a 'quad' These rear additions are executed in brick, the quad has arcades running around 3 sides with arches, clock set above a large entrance archway that opens out of the quad to the West. Exterior walls of the quad buildings have a decorated doorway with a 1561 royal coat of arms, along with the dates 1561 (date the school was created by royal charter) and 1929 (date the new buildings were constructed) The windows to these ranges have large timber surrounds -mirroring the mullion and transom work on the main building -with more metal glazing units with swivel openings mounted within. There has been a new addition to the rear of the main building, it is a full height round turret with conical slate roof. To rear of quad are new buildings of stone, built on a low profile with pitched roofs. Also flat roofed prefabricated classrooms with sectional concrete pebble dashed external walls. A sports pavilion -mock timber framed with brick pillars supporting a jettied upper floor -red clay pantile roof, some vandalised glazing. Caretakers house on the driveway / approach of rusticated limestone, has bay windows with stone mullions housing narrow 1 over 1 sashes, the sides have 2 over 2 sashes in timber. Slate roof and 4 stone stacks. (4)
