Full Description

Large limestone blocks with slots cut into their sides were found on the N bank of the river. These appear to be the remains of temporary weirs, which are known to have been used to deliberately flood the fields on either side of the river in dry seasons. Within the surrounding fields is still evidence of ditches and channels, some now filled in while others remain in use. A map of 1898 shows the channels, with sluices. To the S of the river in area 3 is a narrow channel which runs into the river at c 60m past the farm bridge. At the W end there had been a flood dyke which was dug up several years ago. Within the wooded part to the W of the site stands the remains of a culvert top, though to have some connection with the flood dyke. (1)
