Full Description

A well designed board school of 1889 by Hine & Son. (1)
Hine's last major assignment was the Board School in Lover's Lane, Newark (1889). (2)
A Board School built in 1889. The architects were Hine and Son. Hine’s last commission before retiring. A Queen Anne style building dominated be tall ventilation tower, a landmark feature visible along Meyrick Road from Northgate. There is fairly high level of ornament, with Dutch gables, pilasters and banding. The windows are original glazing bar sashes, beneath arches with keystones. Internally, the single folding partition has been removed, however original doors and fitted cupboards survive as do glazed tile walls complete with dado rail. There are also working survivals of the ventilation system, and an impressive truss roof in the hall. The original boundary wall survives in a mutilated state (the carved stone gate lintel has been dismantled) and the roof covering has been badly altered. (NCC Schools Survey 2004) (3)
