Full Description

Bridge carrying an unnamed road over the River Maun. A single span, modern concrete structure. (1)
Bridge shown on Sanderson (2) but not on Chapman (3).
19th century stone built bridge with 2 arch and single square span. Lintel/saddle of bridge is 20th [Century] concrete and the parapets are covered with 20th century steel. It is not known if original stone parapets survive. The bridge carries the former historic access road into the medieval settlement known as Kirkby Hardwick. Today the bridge spans the Robin Hood Railway line. This railway line is the most notable in the County being the route of the former Mansfield and Pinxton Railway built under a parliamentary act of 1817 to link Mansfield with the Cromford Canal at Pinxton. This opened wider markets for local coal and building stone and lime from Mansfield. The line opened in 1819 and wagons were horse drawn, horse drawn passenger services opened in 1832. [http://www.nottsheritagegateway.org.uk/themes/railways.htm] The line was taken over by the Midland Railway Company in 1847 and the track was relaid due to new technology [http://www.aditnow.co.uk/Mines/Mansfield-Pinxton-Railway_19201/]. (4)
The public nomination states that the bridge was built in 1821, according to Mansfield Pinxton Railway Archive. This has not been verified but is possible when considering that the original Portland Viaduct on this line was built in 1817 by Josias Jessop.
The bridge is of historic interest and is significant due to its association with early railway development.
Nominated Site for Local Listing by Ashfield District Council (ADC Ref: 953)(4).
