Full Description

Built in 1878. The architect here was R. C. Sutton, designer of a number of ecclesiastical buildings in the county. See (1).
David Herbert Lawrence was of course the most famous pupil, winning the County Council scholarship in 1898. (2)
A Board School built in 1878 to the design of architect Richard Charles Sutton, who was responsible for over a dozen listed buildings in Nottinghamshire. Composed of 3 radiating wings, the building is dominated by a double-storey entrance block. The wall surfaces have stone banding. The principal windows have segmental heads and stone transoms. Much fenestration has been replaced, but much of the original iron framed casements survive on the main façade. Covered playgrounds and outside toilets survive, as does the Bulwell stone boundary wall and gates. The roof has banded tiles and a large timber vent cupola. The interior retains original folding partitions as well as original doors and floor coverings. The corbelled roof structure is still visible. (NCC School Survey 2004)(3)
