Full Description

A hoard of 1237 gold coins (C14-C15) together with 9 pieces of jewellery, were found in 1966 on a building site at Fishpool. Probably another 50 coins were found but privately retained. This is the largest find of Med gold coins in England. (2)
Found on a building site. The hoard consisted of 1237 gold coins, four rings, four pieces of jewellery and two lengths of chain. Although there may have been more coins in the hoard, there is no reason to believe that there was any more jewellery. No container was found, although it was observed that when the mechanical excavtor struck the hoard the coins were stacked in neat piles and that the find as a whole was pear-shaped, suggesting that the coins had been contained in a bag. (Detailed descriptions of jewellery). (3)
Ascertained from local enquiry that the hoard was found in sand near Summercourt Drive on 22/03/1966 at above grid ref. Now in the BM. (4)
The hoard consists of gold nobles and jewelry. The last coins are of 1464. It was possibly buried by the Lancastrian monarchy, as the origins of the coins relate to their movements from 1461-4, during the campaign of the deposed Henry VI. It may have been buried after the defeat at the battle of Hexham. (6)
