Full Description
The strip of land in Notts which is isolated by the modern road is called Gallows Nooking Common on the enclosure map of 1790, while Stukeley (2) shows a tumulus, known as Potter Hill, in the centre of the Fosse Way, apparently at this location. This must be of post-Ro date... The name Gallows Nooking Common may imply the use of the tumulus as a gallows site in the late Anglo-Saxon period or later. (1)
The Abbot of Peterborough … set up a gallows at Collingham and there hanged a thief (leading to a dispute with the Bishop of Lincoln). At last they agreed (in 1286), the Abbot being constrained to pull down his gallows. (3)
See M5987 for possible barrow, M6000 for Fosse Way, M18155 for county boundary.
