Full Description

The significant features revealed in the excavation included a timber-framed structure represented by a row of large post holes. The building intrudes right into the line of the defences and this suggests that it must have been either a tower or a gateway. The complete absence of any apparent structures to the north of the post-holes suggests very strongly that the building was in fact a gateway. This probability is increased by the apparent alignment of a road within the settlement leading to the river. (1)
