Full Description
House of Knights Hospitallers existed at Winkburn 1199 to 1382. (1)
The church was granted by Henry Hosat, and the vill by Adam Tyson before 1199. Later it was a camera of Ossington. At the camera there was a manse, with garden and dovecote, and a windmill, and the appropriated church of Winkburn. In the Valor of 1534 Ossington was merged with Newland (Yorks) and rents from Winkburn are noted. (2) The parish church which dates from the Norman period is obviously the church noted above, and is regarded as one of the 3 Temple churches remaining in the country. Nothing of the Hospitallers house has apparently survived but its site was presumably adjacent to the church, possibly where the Hall now stands. (3) (4)
