Full Description
To the north of the town, well clear of any housing, a chemical manure works was opened c 1880 by Quibell Bros Ltd. A significant part of the complex was demiolished in recent times to make way for a flyover. There was a main through-passage connecting the wharf side to the east where a tunnel beneath a railway track led to Quibell Lane. The glue works has now moved to this side of the track, it has grown since 1945 and is now part of Croda International. The earlier part of the works, now used as workshops, made good use of the railway line, with a railway siding supplying it with animal carcases. Part of the track remains, as does part of an internal railway line entering the works through the south entrance. The complex consists of a gatehouse, in use as a canteen, stables, now a boilerhouse, offices (1930-1950) which are still offices and also a laboratory and a chemical manure works. (1)
See M3302, M3830, M18089 and M18090 for individual buildings in the complex.
