Full Description

Mercia was broken up into shires under Edward the Elder in the C9. However, the earliest mention of the county is not until 1016, when Cnut marched north and harried Nottinghamshire. (1)
At Gallows Nooking Common, a possible IA territorial boundary whose line appears to be followed by an earthen bank forming the later county boundary. (2)
