Full Description

This stone was found together with modern bricks and other debris, including dressed stone probably from the Priory at Mattersey some 500m to the north. A “stone” at Horsen Bank is marked on the 1891 6” Ordnance Survey map of Notts VI SE (surveyed 1885). This stone is located within the garden of Blaco Hill Farm and lies within 60m of the place to which the worked stone pillar had been moved. It would seem likely that the 1891 map depicts its original location The stone is of Cadeby Limestone, and has been dressed to form an oblong pillar 0.72m long, by 0.27m square at its top. The engraved side has the letters ‘GJ’ executed in Roman-type with serifs at the base of the letters. Below is the letter ‘B’. On the top of the pillar (and read from its back) is the number ’22’, above this ‘BR’ is fashioned. (1)
