Full Description

An Anglo-Saxon trefoil brooch found at Brough. (1) (2)
Probably the one in NWM (gives SK 839585, for all finds from Brough). (3)
The brooch was presented by R Wooley before 1930. Probably from the collection of TCS Wooley who excavated at Brough in 1906 (sic). Museum notes cross ref to VCH. (4)
Three Anglo-Saxon brooches from Brough. No 34, Early type mid-C5th; No 35, Small long-brooch head with part of bow. Leeds' group d-e cross pallee derivaties. Decorated around head with two lines of small engraved strokes, two holes in head-plate; off-set and different diameters. No 36, Small long-brooch, panelled type; with parallel lines coming away from from the bow of the brooch. (Note 3) Several more fragments of small long brooches and annulars have been found including 3 Aberg class 1 brooches, 2 of which are now in Lincoln Museum. (6)
The nature of the activity which is represented (by these finds) is unclear, but as such finds are most commonly obtained from burials, there is a strong possibility of an associated Anglo-Saxon cemetery. (7)
Grid ref approx - not drawn on map.
See M3625 for Roman town.
